Let Me Be Your Tool
Dear Lord,
I think
of all those people
who long to do good,
who see light
but don't understand it,
who look at the counterfeit,
and not knowing how to choose,
pick the pretty false
over the solid true,
and think it is well.
I do not know
all the answers, Lord,
but would,
if you choose,
to help show
those who look
the true from the false
the tinfoil from the gold,
the solid from the insubstantial.
Let me point someone
to your beacon on the hill,
where heaven and earth meet
at the cross at Golgotha,
where you wait
to give life
to those who will listen.
I do not know
all the answers, Lord,
but your hands
know what to do.
Amen.

The Tools In Your Hand
O Lord, King of the Universe,
You hold our feeble lives in your hands,
and yet,
caring for us,
you have lifted us up
by the power of the Cross,
and by the blood of Jesus.
Help us see, O God,
how we are your children,
this day,
always,
and that by living your word,
by being salt and leaven,
you use us to let your light shine in.
Thank you, Lord,
for the chances you give us
to stand up against the darkness,
to be beacons
of your light,
lanterns against the dark.
Thank you Lord,
for letting us be the tools in your hand.
Amen.

You Have Given Us a Sign
O Abba,
Our Father in Heaven,
Let your name be holy!
You have given to us a sign
that you have not forgotten us,
but that in your hands
is mercy
and the hope and peace that only come
from heaven.
Help us Lord,
to use this gift as you would have us do,
to shine your light into the darkness,
to see Jesus in those in need,
to work for the culture of life,
and to be a witness for you,
this day and always.
In the name of Jesus, Alleluia!
Amen.

Lord, as the tension mounts
and the waiting grows so hard,
when times are rough
be with us,
be our shepherd,
let your rod and staff comfort us,
prepare that place for us
in the midst our our enemies,
lead us beside the calm waters that come
from trust in thee,
restore our soul when we feel like screaming,
for thou art with us,
even though we walk through the dark valleys
we will fear no evil,
you anoint us with the oil of your blessing.
Goodness and mercy will come from our trust in thee,
and we shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Meditation on the First Two Lines of the Our Father
Father, Abba,
what a gift,
to call you,
who breathed upon the waters
to create light out of darkness,
world out of chaos,
life out of nothingness,
father,
parent,
ours.
O let your name be made holy,
here, today,
in every heart who will acknowledge
your lordship,
the burning flame
that gives meaning
and burns away the dross
of emptiness,
of meaninglessness.
O Father,
today and always,
may we thank you
for the gift
of creating us,
of loving us,
of breathing life into us
and transforming us.
Amen.
